RSS Feeds
« on: October 08, 2005, 08:47:43 PM »
RSS Feeds are some cool shit.  Write that down in your livejournal.

RSS is a file format based on XML, usually used to "feed" or "grab" new content off of sites that you regularly check.

Wikipedia Definition
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_Feed

To use RSS Feeds, you need to have an "aggregator".  This may sound daunting, but two of the biggest sites on the web offers one for free (most other rss aggregators are free too).

My Yahoo = http://my.yahoo.com
Google = http://google.com/ig

Google, also just released their newest beta "reader".  I've been playing around with it, and so far I like it.  It is located at:  http://google.com/reader

What the hell is this all about?

I just uploaded a rss feed for the forums.
http://beerinator.com/backendforums.php
This page should look dumb if you click on it.  But if you copy the url from the address bar (or copy the address I list here) you can dump it in your my yahoo, or your google ig homepage and everytime someone posts in the forums, it will be updated in your homepage.

The main site's articles have always had an rss feed, but I altered some of the code today to display the beginning of the article.  Check it out if you are excited about RSS FEEDS!

If you ever forget the addresses, feel free to click the little icons at the bottom of every beerinator page.

If you are planning to get updated to 2005 and start using RSS feeds and you have any questions, let me know.

What would an RSS feed do for me that just going to the Beerinator web site doesn't?

Absolutely nothing.

But, if you visit 5 sites regularly, and they all have RSS feeds, then you will only have to look at one page (or whatever you use to read your RSS feeds) to see which ones have updates.

I like to read the BeerAdvocate articles, but I don't like clicking on the main page to see if there have been updates (I bookmark link to the BA forums).  I have my RSS feeds coming into a page where I can see if I have email, so I knock out two (or many) tasks with one punch.

edit:  here is what my http://google.ig page looks like;

I tried to add your Real Simple BEER Syndication to my own RSS reader using this URL: http://www.beerinator.com/beerfeeds/cache/opml.xml

I got the following error: "Error parsing RSS XML - Undefined root element: opml"

Any idea why?   :?

I don't understand this ... does this help?

http://feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=http://www.beerinator.com/beerfeeds/cache/opml.xml

I don't think you can add an opml file like that.  But to be honest, I'm not totally sure.

It's most likely "catching" and causing an error on beermapping.com because that is the first feed on the list.  I'm pretty sure if I removed it, it would just go to the next one and an error would occur there.  I'll research opml files a bit soon.  My email client just told me that 5 more beermapping emails just came in...

Here it's run through a opml beta validator;
http://validator.opml.org/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.beerinator.com%2Fbeerfeeds%2Fcache%2Fopml.xml

I'm guessing the error may exist in the way the aggregator was written.  I'll look into it this weekend.

I still get this error:  Error parsing RSS XML: Not a valid xml document: This is an uexpected token.  The expected token is 'WHITESPACE'. Line 1, position 63.

I guess post again if you have any luck this weekend.  Thanks!

Sorry - it looks way out of date.  I'm talking specifically about the forum RSS feed.  This is what I get.  I am clicking the link at the bottom of the homepage.  thanks!
