beerinator swap meet / Re: FT: Sculpin IPA
« on: April 08, 2010, 09:07:59 PM »
I got this at Total Wine in Brier Creek about two weeks ago.  But they only had 12 bombers, which I imagine sold out pretty quickly.

Tom, you up for a swap of some sort?

I've got a bomber of 2010 Sculpin IPA available to trade.  Looking for something comparable in quality.  Style doesn't matter as long as it is a good brew.

general beer discussion / Odd flavors in Duck Rabbit Brews?
« on: January 25, 2010, 04:21:59 PM »
I have always been a big fan of Duck Rabbit beers, and kudos to them for their great brews.

I do have an item for discussion, however.  When they first came out with the Baltic Porter, Wee Heavy, Barleywine and Impy Stout, I noticed a similar sour-like flavor in all of them that I attributed to the yeast being used.  I seem to remember a forum about this quite a while back.

This weekend, I had a beer tasting and we had one bottle of the original '06 Baltic Porter, and one bottle of the '07 version.  Both have been stored in my fridge since purchase.

I thought the beers would age better than they did.  In fact, the sour-like flavor I noticed when the beers first came out was greatly intensified and really gave the beers a bad flavor, IMO.

Has anyone else had this experience?  Is it the strain of yeast being used?

I don't believe the bottles were spoiled, given that I have noticed this same flavor in multiple batches and styles from the brewery.

Any thoughts?

nc beer talk / Highland Tasgall Ale
« on: October 14, 2009, 01:25:19 PM »
I am very excited as I just found some Highland Tasgall Ale today at Raleigh Whole Foods!  I thought this was being discontinued by the brewer, and am glad that is not!

Does anyone know if this is a one time brew or if it is back in the regular rotation?

(If I have missed a previous thread about this, please let me know :))

I think I only went there twice.  Decent selection of beer; however I was never impressed by the food.  In fact, some of it was downright awful.  Once the Alehouse opened, I never went back to Old Chicago.  And with a Mellow Mushroom right across the street?  I'm not really surprised.

I was just down in Columbia, SC this past weekend and stopped by Greens.  Multiple offerings from Lagunitas, including Maximus and Undercover Shutdown ale, plus several offerings from Bear Republic.

I was so excited last year when we first got these beers into the Raleigh area.

I just got back.  I went there about 10:30, and the line was wrapped completely around the beer and wine section out to the front door.  Looked to be at least a 45 min-1 hr wait.

Still some decent brews left, but not worth waiting in line an hour.  I saw a few beers that I like that look like they will still be around for a while, so I wil probably go back and check it out again.

Thanks for the heads up on the Hercule.  It is one I probably would have skipped over.

Peace Street had at least one, maybe two cases as of this afternoon.  $20.99/4.

Too rich for my blood.  ::) Is it really that good?  Or is it just that limited and hyped?

It reminded me of chocolate pecan pie made with some bourbon.

I thought it was one of the most complex beers I've had, but it is not something I could drink everyday.  But I am glad I tried it and that I have a couple bottles remaining.

In the email, they said they are moving to an online model instead.  I hope it works out for them.

Just got an email from the store (I am on their mailing list) and the Tipsy Gourmet will be closing.  Sad news as I liked the store.

They are having a massive clearance sale, including beer and wine 50% off and food items 70% off.

Might be a good chance to stock up on some good beer.
